Both the UN and the mainstream media are accusing Israel of war crimes after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) returned fire near a UN school from which Palestinians were firing mortars.
There were explosives and booby traps installed by Hamas within the school which blew up, killing dozens of people. The IDF denies firing at the school and clearly has no intention of wounding civilians. Yet UNWRA representatives have suggested that the IDF deliberately targeted the school despite overwhelming evidence that the school was being used by Hamas and that the IDF did not fire at the school.
At least thirty people were reportedly killed and 53 wounded in an explosion in a UN-run school in the town of Jabalya in the northern Gaza Strip, according to Palestinians. The IDF issued a statement saying the school grounds were used by terrorists to fire mortar shells at the troops.
The infantrymen returned mortar shell fire into the school grounds, the army said. Defense officials told The Associated Press that booby-trapped bombs in the school triggered the secondary explosions which killed scores of Palestinians on the site.
On Tuesday (Jan. 6), following identified and repeated rocket and mortar launchings at Israeli territory, the IAF aircraft struck a school in Beit Hanoun. After an investigation that took place over the past hour, it was revealed that terror operatives from Hamas's military wing and a mortar battery cell, which were found in the school, were firing on IDF forces in the area. Hamar operatives Imad Abu Askhar and Hassan Abu Askhar were amongst terrorists that were identified at the school.
The IDF Spokesperson noted that in the past Hamas operatives have frequently fired at Israeli territory and IDF forces from within schools, using civilians as human shields, as proven by a video taken by a UVA. The video plainly displays rocket and mortar shell fire launched from within the UNRWA school in Beit Hanoun a year ago.
