Fort Hood Shooter May Have Exhibited Signs of Radicalism

Update (November 6, 2009, 10:10AM): Someone claiming to be a contributor from salafimanhaj.com left me a comment stating that my article alleges Hasan wrote for their site. My article did not make such a claim anywhere. I have added a couple of words to my initial blog post. To clarify, commenting on a website or a document from a site does not make someone a contributor. I never used the word "contributor" in conjunction with Hasan's name even once, therefore it makes little sense to suggest I was alleging that he contributed to any website. I have not, in any place on this blog, alleged anything about salafimanhaj.com's political or religious stances and have no reason to do so.

Major Nidal Hasan, who murdered 13 of his colleagues on November 5, might have exhibited some signs of radicalism long before the attack at Fort Hood.

Earlier this year Hasan allegedly posted comments online praising suicide bombers. Scribd.com lists the source of the article on which Hasan is said to have posted comments as being from salafimanhaj.com. "If one suicide bomber can kill 100 enemy soldiers because they were caught off guard that would be considered a strategic victory," commented a user named "NidalHasan" on a document entitled "Martyrdom in Islam Versus Suicide Bombing." According to a colleague of the shooter, Hasan has expressed sympathy for the jihadist who murdered two military recruiters in June 2009.

Hasan's comments on the internet sparked the interest of federal law enforcement. However, an official investigation was not opened.

Hasan, who is 39-years-old, was never deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. Therefore arguments that he suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder make very little rational sense. The shooter is the son of Muslim parents from a town near Jerusalem. At first glance he seemed to be a level-headed individual from a good family. However, a very troubling portrait of the shooter is now emerging.

Here are some additional details from Fox News:
WASHINGTON — His name appears on radical Internet postings. A fellow officer says he fought his deployment to Iraq and argued with soldiers who supported U.S. wars. He required counseling as a medical student because of problems with patients.

There are many unknowns about Nidal Malik Hasan, the man authorities say is responsible for the worst mass killing on a U.S. military base. Most of all, his motive.

For six years before reporting for duty at Fort Hood, Texas, in July, the 39-year-old Army major worked at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center pursuing his career in psychiatry, as an intern, a resident and, last year, a fellow in disaster and preventive psychiatry. He received his medical degree from the military's Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., in 2001.

While an intern at Walter Reed, Hasan had some "difficulties" that required counseling and extra supervision, said Dr. Thomas Grieger, who was the training director at the time.

Grieger said privacy laws prevented him from going into details but noted that the problems had to do with Hasan's interactions with patients. He recalled Hasan as a "mostly very quiet" person who never spoke ill of the military or his country.

"He swore an oath of loyalty to the military," Grieger said. "I didn't hear anything contrary to those oaths."

But, more recently, federal agents grew suspicious.

At least six months ago, Hasan came to the attention of law enforcement officials because of Internet postings about suicide bombings and other threats, including posts that equated suicide bombers to soldiers who throw themselves on a grenade to save the lives of their comrades.

They had not determined for certain whether Hasan is the author of the posting, and a formal investigation had not been opened before the shooting, said law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the case.

Hasan did this because he is a Muslim fanatic. All of the Muslims who are now complaining need to ask themselves how they would feel if their children was shot down by some religious nut. Taxpayers subsidized Hasan's schooling so he could murder fellows soldiers.

Hasan's relatives should realize they are not the only Americans who have felt persecuted. The difference is the rest of us minorities don't use that as an excuse to murder people we have political and religious disagreements with.

Islam = the religion of body pieces.

There is a serious error in this post, for it says that Nidal "posted praise of suicide bombers at salafimanhaj.com"!!!!!?

I am a contributor to that site and the website categorically had no contributions from him whatsoever!

Please check your sources thoroughly before making such serious claims and allegations.

Moreover, salafimanhaj.com has been consistently against suicide bombings. So it would be more accurate for you to have said that someone with the same name as him was discussing the issue and made referral to an article from the site - an article does not praise the likes of his actions.

Anonymous 2: I have added clarification. For the record, I never stated anywhere that Hasan contributed to your website. This is a serious claim, without any merit, for you to make. I never used the shooter's name in conjunction with "contributor" anywhere.

Please see my update in the original blog post. I hope this resolves the issue you believe exists.

Okay Reut, thanks for the update to your article! Please refer to our website and please for your own record and see the articles that we have there which are totally against such acts of betrayal, extremism, terrorism and treachery:

www.salafimanhaj.com/pdf/SalafiManhaj_Terrorism_In_KSA.pdf

Not to mention a whole host of other details, for which we at the site have had death threats from terrorists and extremists.

Furthermore, from scribd it seems that it was not the poster with the name 'Nidal Hasan' who posted the article but rather someone called 'Riz Khan999' who posted it in opposition to the one with the name 'Nidal Hasan'. Hence, the article was posted to refute what was stated by 'Nidal Hasan'. This update also needs to be made to your article Reut.

Anonymous: I commend you for your stance against extremism and terrorism, especially in light of threats and other abuse. I will read these documents and hope that people will recognize that plenty of Muslims do not stand for atrocities committed in their name.

Best wishes,

Anonymous,

If you look at the Scribd.com site, you will clearly see that a user going by the name "Nidal Hasan" made comments on an article.

Click here to read the comments.

I never claimed a user called "Nidal Hasan" posted the article. I wrote that this person posted comments on an article. There is a big difference.

Therefore, there is no reason for any additional updates or clarification. The article is very clear as it is.

Best wishes,
Reut R. Cohen

Hasan commented on a document on Scribd which comes from another website (salafi-something). His comments appear under the article. That's exactly what Reut's article says. There needs to be no other explanations. Is it so hard to read and understand clear English?

The man is a fanatical monster. A major killing his own soldiers while screaming 'god is great' is disgusting.

Thanks for your article Reut. The update is helpful.

It is also concise and clear to me. Chill out people.

" Hasan's comments on the internet sparked the interest of federal law enforcement. "

" commented a user named "NidalHasan" "

That seems pretty clear to me. Reut my advice is not to post any more clarifications for anyone. Nothing you wrote is difficult to understand unless a person deliberately wants to misunderstand.

Hi Reut,

Great article!

By now you already know that the shooter at Fort Hood shouted "Allahu Akbar" as he massacred his fellow soldiers. Statements from colleagues of Mr. Malik Nidal Hasan suggest that he was very sympathetic to jihadists. Here at Women Against Shariah we are in complete agreement with you. There is no way to argue that Malik Nidal Hasan killed people because of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He had never been to Iraq or Afghanistan. Psychologists don't suffer from PTSD because their patients do.

Sincerely,
Your friends at Women Against Shariah

Dear Ms. Reut

I wrote the paper on Martyrdom Operations vs Suicide Bombing which Nidal Hasan commented upon.

Please refer to the full version of the paper, which includes a discussion of Nidal Hasan's comments and actions at Fort Hood, here:

Dear B. Adam,

Thanks for your essay. I have seen it. Also, I'd like to reiterate that I noted in my post that the user named "NidalHasan" posted comments on the document. It is pretty clear that he merely commented on it. I'm not questioning your article, but the alleged statements made by the Fort Hood shooter commenting on the Scribd.com document.

I appreciate that you took the time to post a link to your essay here with the new updated section.

With best regards,
Reut R. Cohen
